Types Of Crochet Tops

Crochet Tank Top

Tank tops are sleeveless tops usually with thicker or regular straps. It is the most popular type of crochet top because it’s the easiest to make. If you’re new to crocheting, try making a tank top with basic crochet stitches like single or double crochets. Stick to regular straps and shape for an easier project.

Crop Top

Crochet crop tops are cut short to reveal the stomach. A very popular among teens and young adults, they pair up well with trendy high-waisted jeans or pants.

Crop tops usually have thinner straps than crochet tank tops to match their airy look. Many crop top patterns made with simple crochet stitches are dedicated to beginners. There is less row to make than while crocheting a tank top :).

Example:  Crop Top, Summer Halter Crop Top

Halter Top

A halter top is similar to the tank top, but the straps are tied behind the neck. Halter tops can have a regular length or be cropped just under the bra. Halter tops are very popular to wear in warm weather when you want to expose your back and avoid tanned stripes on your skin.

Boho Top

A Boho top is another style of the crochet tank or crop top. The name is related to the top’s style in a hippie or retro fashion. Boho-style tops mix patterns and textures, often with fringes, wooden beads, or other decorative elements on the bottom. Often boho boho-style tops use a traditional granny square motif to introduce a mix of colors.

Off-Shoulder Top

Off-the-shoulder top exposes the shoulders. It has straps (or short sleeves), but they do not rest on the shoulders – they are lowered to the breast line instead.

Bandeau Top (a Tube Top)

a shoulderless and sleeveless garment that wraps around the upper torso. It starts at the level of the armpit leaving the entire arms, neckline, and upper back uncovered.

Tunics

a loose-fitting garment in the length of a long shirt or a short dress. Tunics combine comfort with a stylish crochet style.

FAQ:

What is the Best Yarn for Crochet Crop Tops and Tanks?

As for most summer crochet garments, the yarn you choose should be lightweight and breathable. Any natural yarns will be the best! Choose cotton, linen, bamboo, or blends. These kinds of yarn have yet another advantage, namely – you can wash them in the washing machine!

How much yarn do I need to crochet a crop top?

The amount of yarn you will need will depend on the pattern you choose the size you are making, the yarn weight, and the crochet hook size. It can vary from 2-4 skein of 50 g sport yarn for a standard-size crop top, and twice more for a longer top in a pulse size. That is why you should always check the pattern instructions how meny skeins of yarn you need depending on the desired top size.

Is a free crochet crop top pattern easy enough for beginners?

Yes, they are! Of course, each pattern features different design elements, but most of them you can make with basic stitches. If you’re familiar with them, you will be able to start your first crochet top.

How to choose the right color for crop tops?

First of all, see if you’re going to use one color or more. If there are two or more required, choose the colors that will either complement or stay in contrast with each other. Consider the colors you like to wear and the rest of your wardrobe. Make it in a hue that will go nicely with whatever you already have.

Do you know any plus-size crochet top patterns? Are there any crochet crop top patterns for big bust?

You can easily adjust any crochet pattern to a bigger or smaller size. Look especially for a tank top with thicker straps to give additional support for breasts or hide bra straps. A great choice is also a crochet tunic which is comfortable and covers a belly. If you want to show off a neckline off-shoulder top can be a perfect choice.

To hide armpits, look for tee-tops. You should also check out the mesh top (overtop) patterns which allow you to cover everything you need but also look intriguing and stylish.

Here are my suggestions for you to check out for a free crochet top pattern :

Are there any crochet tops/bralette patterns for big bust with small band sizes?

With bigger beasts, you have to support their weight with thicker straps and/or give them support underneath and on your back.

They are harder to find, but of course there are! You have two choices – you can wear a top over your bra or without it. Crop tops that allow you to hide a bra must have thicker straps and a solid back beneath the armpits. Check out the Summer Free Crochet Crop Top Pattern or Granny Square Halter. If you want to go bra-less, your top has to support bra weight with thicker straps and give them support underneath and on your back.

Check Luna Crop Top Free Pattern  – this top has regulated straps on the back and on the neck. Additionally, straps on the front are not only cut but will give additional support and will prevent a breast from jumping out 🙂 Also a thicker yarn matters. Here, a worsted-weight cotton yarn prevents your top from stretching easily.

For additional support and comfort, you can add thicker straps and sew-in bra pads, like here: Easy Crochet Bralette.
