FAQ

As in other crochet projects, the hook size should match the yarn weight. In the case of crochet snowflakes, we usually use thin thread, which requires 1.5 – 2 mm crochet hook. However, if you’re not sure what hook size to use, always check the yarn label or crochet pattern for recommendations.

No, because the effect may be drastically different than the original. If you’re following a lacy snowflake pattern designed in cotton thread and a 1.5 mm hook, switching to heavier yarn will result in much bigger, chunky snowflake in a totally different style.

Switching from cotton thread to a delicate and equally thin wool yarn also isn’t a good choice, because cotton is much sturdier and holds the shape better. Threads like mohair or alpaca will be too flimsy to enhance the lacy pattern.

Crochet snowflakes can look really bad fresh off the hook – the thread is twisted, the picots are all over the place, and the whole project looks messy. That’s why we block and stiffen them to achieve the regular shape. However, if your snowflakes look uneven after blocking, there may be three reasons for it happening.

  • First, make sure it’s not a counting mistake. Too few or too many stitches may shorten or elongate one of the snowflake arms.
  • Second, it may be a problem with uneven tension. Check if the stitches are roughly equal in all rounds, and if not, redo the loosened or squished parts.
  • Three, the snowflake may not have been blocked properly. It’s up to you how much you stretch the snowflake arms and where you pin them down. Get a ruler and measure their length to see which needs adjusting.

Mercerized cotton threads such as Aunt Lydia’s Classic 10 Crochet Thread or Scheepjes Maxi Sugar Rush will be the best choice for most projects. Always check the designer’s recommended materials before starting and try to match the yarn weight as close as you can.

The process of blocking and stiffening requires treating the finished snowflake in starch and pinning it down to dry. Learn more about it in our article called How to Block and Stiffen Crochet.
