I’m a craft designer and author of hundreds of articles and reviews about crocheting and other crafts. I search out and present novel approaches to classic patterns and techniques to encourage you to try something new. I’m delighted that so many of you read my posts and that I can contribute to promoting our crochet community. I’m interested in crafts, interior design and love traveling and sitting next to a campfire. I live with my husband and three kids in the Rockies.

Most crochet squares fall in the 4″ to 12″ range, and are used as building blocks for larger projects. However, today, I thought that we’d show something a little different. Here are some patterns for honkin’ big squares that are projects of and in themselves. Not only are they attractive and unique, they will be a lot of fun to make and work on. Please have a look at these unusual but great projects.

Kinship Square Free Crochet Pattern

The Kinship Square is a beautiful, mandala-based square with an extended border. The finished project is 16.5″ inches on a side. It would be a perfect design to make a small mat or doily on a sideboard or coffee table, or as the upper side of a pillow or cushion. The kinship mandala from the center can also function on its own as a separate project, very versatile.
