Have you already discovered the brillaint phenomenon of mile-a-minute blankets? If so, you probably know how easy and quick they are to make. This time, you can make a delightfully cute baby blanket featuring literally the same style. Check out the free crochet pattern from the Caron Design Team to get started!
What Yarn Works Best for Texture and Drape?
This charming mile-a-minute baby blanket will look fantastic in both medium and finer weights. The original pattern calls for DK yarn such as Caron Cuddle Soft, which is unfortunately no longer available. Instead, you can choose, for example, Bernat Softee Baby DK or Stylecraft Special DK.
The photos seen above present a creative variation of this baby blanket project by darestoknit. This talented crochet maker used Lion Brand Pound of Love, a wrosted 100% acrylic yarn in soothing baby blue and white.
You should also keep in mind that the thicker the yarn you use, the less drape the blanket fabric will have.
How Many Strips Do I Need for a Baby-Size Afghan?
For a baby blanket measuring approx. 33″ x 38″, you will need to make 12 strips. If you need a longer or wider size, it can be easily done by adding more rows or strips. Therefore, you can create a blanket that has any dimensions. You can even turn it into an adult-sized version, which will require working 17 strips and 100 rows.
How to Join the Strips for the Mile A Minute Baby Afghan?
The pattern offers two simple joining methods that result in a slightly different look. The first one is Slip Stitch Join, which involves holding two strips right side up and slip stitching through the top loop of each strip. This method creates a flat, invisible seam.
However, if you’re looking for extra texture, you can try Single Crochet Join instead. For this technique, you will place the strips wrong sides facing each other and work single crochets along the side. This creates a raised ridge between strips for texture.
