One crochet theme we’ve neglected of late are birds, and specifically in the form of a bird applique. While perhaps not as fancy as a bird amigurumi, these wonderful two-dimensional decorations are the perfect way to put some avian ambiance on any project or item. Certainly, as with real birds, you can really jazz up the colors or keep them down to a designer few. Moreover, whole flocks can be made to decorate a wall hanging, or indeed, the wall.

These stylized little birdies are a great way to both decorate an item as well as repair it. After all, wouldn’t your kids prefer a bird shaped patch like this on their jeans rather than a boring cloth rectangle?

This bird applique, on the other hand, is so designer and decorative, it would not look out of place on a living room wall, for example as a fun accent over a mantlepiece.
