Here is another wonderful idea for a blanked based on a square segment. The Maybelle Blanket by Annette MB Ciccarelli is easy to make and can be greatly varied simply through the judicious use of color. It’s a great idea for getting the winter blues away.
What’s the Best Yarn for the Maybelle Baby Blanket?
The original pattern uses Svarta Fåret Tilda, a sport-weight yarn, ideal for making detailed and light squares. This yarn is half cotton and half acrylic, so it’s both durable and soft.
If you want to try something different, other sport-weight yarns like Scheepjes Catona or Drops Safran also work well. Remember, the type of yarn affects how the blanket will drape and feel.
General Instructions
The Maybelle Baby Blanket is made up of 30 crochet flower squares arranged in a 5×6 grid. Start by crocheting individual flowers and then turning them into squares using cream-colored yarn. Next, join the squares together with the Join-As-You-Go technique. Lastly, add a border and edging to frame the blanket nicely.

A Creative Pattern Variation
Crocheter Mi-Chan731 added a unique twist to the original Maybelle Blanket with bold colors and different yarns. She used Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Yarn and Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice. With the addition of a simple shell edging, her blanket became vibrant and fun.
This shows that the Maybelle Blanket pattern can be a starting point for endless creative ideas!

Can I Adjust the Size of the Blanket Easily?
This flower square blanket pattern is very flexible. Just add or remove squares to fit a crib, stroller, or even a full-size bedspread. However, cotton yarn can feel heavy, so if you are making a bigger blanket, consider using a lighter yarn to avoid too much weight.
Sweet pattern!
Спасибо люблю ” бабушкин квадрат “…во всех его проявлениях…
In comparing to the original Maybell pattern, I noticed you didn't actually do the join-as-you-go (4th row around the squares). I can't tell what stitch you used to join using the blue yarn. Could you please share? I like the look of it and am not wanting to do another round of DC as indicated in the original pattern.
