Grab a bunch of leftover yarn ends and make an easy crochet granny square bookmark. Make it super colorful, toned down, or monochrome – it will have a different character every time! Gift it to a bookworm or make a set for yourself to make your daily reading routine more aesthetic.

This project requires basic crochet skills, so it’s perfect for beginners. You’ll also have the chance to practice invisible seaming, a fantastic technique for joining crochet squares. Is there a better time to add it to your skillset?

In this post, you will find a free crochet pattern for the granny square bookmark.

This free crochet pattern was designed exclusively for Your Crochet by Kate from Crochetpedia.

Pattern Notes

This is a beginner-friendly crochet pattern, and I’m using US terms.

Materials and Tools

  • Yarn: Scheepjes Catona in assorted colors. I used colors 130, 512, 226, 173, 524, and 249. The pattern requires very little yarn, so you can use up any leftovers you have.
  • 2.5 mm crochet hook
  • scissors
  • yarn needle
  • REMEMBER! If you choose a different yarn weight, remember to use a corresponding hook size, and be prepared for the final product to have different measurements.

Measurements

  • This granny bookmark is 4,5 cm (1.8 in) wide and 18 cm (7 in) long.
  • Each granny square is roughly 3 x 3 cm (1.2 x 1.2 inches)
  • You can change the length of the bookmark by adding more squares.

Stitches and Abbreviations

Free Crochet Granny Square Bookmark Pattern

We start by preparing 5 or more granny squares in assorted colors. Then, we use a tapestry needle and scrap yarn to join the squares using invisible mattress stitch. Lastly, we add the border to the bookmark, weave in ends, and steam-block it to add shape.

Granny Squares

You need five small granny squares, with just the first two rounds – round 1 in color 1, and round 2 in color 2.

C1 | Start: Chain 4, form a loop, and close it with a slip stitch.

C1 | Round 1: 2 ch, 2 dc, 2 ch, *3 dc, 2 ch* x 3, slip stitch into the second chain stitch.

Note: The first two double crochets of the next round are worked in the chain space behind the hook, which may be counterintuitive. They wrap around the turning chain, but it doesn’t affect the look of the final piece.

C2 | Round 2: 3 ch, 2 dc in the ch-sp behind the hook, *3 dc, 2 ch, 3 dc* in the next three ch-sp, *3 dc, 2 ch* in the last ch-sp, sl st.

Video Tutorial

I used the same method as shown in this video, so see the beginning and the first two rounds as a reference:

Always crochet over the strand of unused color to avoid loose yarn on the back of your work. Learn how to change colors in this article:

Secure and weave in any yarn ends you can at this point.

Joining Granny Squares

Use little bits of yarn and a tapestry needle to join your squares using the mattress stitch, an invisible type of join. Learn how to do it here:

Notes

  • Don’t worry about the yarn ends left on the sides. You will crochet over them when adding the border.
  • The squares should be stacked on top of each other, creating a tower.
  • When making the join, include all six side stitches and one chain from each corner. Make sure the corners are tightly seamed, because if they are not, the border may buckle.

The granny squares are joined using mattress stitch, but the corners are not yet tightly connected.

Border

Start anywhere you want, preferably in the corner, and attach the yarn in color 1.

Crochet over the yarn ends as you go to hide them.

Round 1: make 1 single crochet per each stitch, and *1 sc, 2 ch, 1 sc* in each corner.

Working on the bookmarks’ side should look like this:

Granny square one: 1 sc in the square corner, 6 sc in the stitches, 1 sc in the square corner, jump to the granny square number two, repeat: 1 sc in the square corner, 6 sc in the stitches, 1 sc in the square corner, et cetera.

When you reach the corner of the bookmark, work *1 sc, 2 ch, 1 sc* in the chain space.

Repeat all around. Close the round with a slip stitch in the first single crochet.

Round 2: chain 1 and repeat round 1, but working the single crochets in the back loop only. Corner stitches are worked normally, in the chain space. Close the round with a slip stitch.

Finishing Touches

Secure, weave in, and trim any leftover yarn ends.

Block or steam-block your granny bookmark to even out the edges and make it slimmer.

The border is ready, but there are some ends to weave in, still!

It’s done!
