In this article:

Hey, book lovers! Make your reading time truly special with these spring-inspired crochet bookmarks. Textural puff flower will peek on top, while the leafy end sticks out at the bottom. The best part? You can make it with tiny bits of leftover yarn. Mix and match the colors to create your favorite combinations!

This pattern uses more complex techniques, such as puff stitches and standing stitches, so it may not be the best choice for absolute beginners. However, if you have any experience working in the round or exploring advanced techniques, it may be a great challenge for you.

In this post, you will find a free crochet pattern for the puff flower bookmark and instructions on how to crochet two versions of the flower head – a round, smaller one, and a bigger one with a dome shape.

This free crochet pattern was designed exclusively for Your Crochet by Kate from Crochetpedia.

Pattern Notes

This bookmark is an intermediate project for skilled crocheters or ambitious beginners, and the pattern uses standard US terms.

You can choose between two sizes of the flower head. The smaller one is round, while the top of the bigger one is pulled inside, creating a dome shape.

Materials and Tools

  • Yarn: Scheepjes Catona in assorted colors. I used colors 524, 173, 205, 249, and 517. The pattern requires very little yarn, so you can use up leftovers.
  • 2.5 mm crochet hook
  • scissors
  • stitch holder – a big safety pin, cable needle, or a piece of rope.
  • REMEMBER! If you choose a different yarn weight, remember to use a corresponding hook size, and be prepared for the final product to have different measurements.

Measurements

  • The bookmark is 23 cm (~9 inches) long, but its length is easily customizable.

Stitches and Abbreviations

Special stitches

2yo puff – a puff stitch with two yarn overs. How to crochet it:

You start with one working loop on your hook.

  1. Yarn over, insert your hook in the required stitch or chain space, and pull up a loop. You have 3 loops on your hook (we are counting yarn overs).
  2. Yarn over again, insert the hook in the same place, and pull up a loop, so you have 5 loops on your hook.
  3. Pull the yarn through all 5 loops on your hook.
  4. Make one chain stitch.

3yo puff – a puff stitch with three yarn overs. How to crochet it:

Start the same way as 2yo puff, but work step 2 one more time, so you have three yarn overs in total. You should have 7 loops on your hook in step 3. Always finish by making one chain stitch.

5yo puff – a puff stitch with five yarn overs. How to crochet it:

Start the same way as 2yo puff, but repeat step 2 three more times, so you have five yarn overs in total. You should have 11 loops on your hook in step 3. Always finish by making one chain stitch.

Standing puff – standing stitch allows you to start the round without the turning chain. Instead, you make a slip knot on your hook, yarn over “in the air”, and then work the stitch in the desired place.

You can choose between two sizes of the flower head. The smaller one is round, while the top of the bigger one is pulled inside, creating a dome shape.

Workflow

We start by making the stem in color one. First, we make the bigger leaf, next, the small one, and the chain stitch stem, in one continuous pattern.

The flower head is made separately in rounds using all three colors. Before it’s finished, we attach the stem to the flower head. Then, we finish the flower head and close it, hiding the yarn ends inside.

Lastly, we secure and hide other yarn ends and steam-block the stem of the bookmark.

The Stem

Chain 10, 1 sl st in the 2nd chain stitch. 1 sc, 1 hdc, 2 dc, 1 hdc, 2 sc, 1 sl st.

Now make 2 chains and turn the work upside down to work in the bottom part of the foundation chain (the same stitches, but from the other side). To avoid gaps, insert the hook under the strand of yarn you haven’t yet worked in.

1 sl st, 2 sc, 1 hdc, 2 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc, 2 sl st (make the last slip stitch in the tip of the leaf).

bookmark tutorial

The first leaf is done. Don’t break the yarn.

Chain 10, 1 sc in the 2nd chain stitch, 1 sc, 2 hdc, 1 dc, 2 hdc, 1 sc, 1 sl st (worked under two strands of yarn). Now insert the hook in between the two leaves, pull up a loop, and work 1 sc.

Two leaves are ready.

Chain 65 or however many you want to achieve the desired stem length. Mine is 23 cm (~9 inches).

Your stem is ready. Cut the yarn, but leave about 7-10 cm (3-4 inches) of tail.

Flower Heads

Each round in which we are introducing a new color requires using a standing stitch to avoid turning chains.

Small Flower Head – Round

C1 | Start: Make a magic ring.

C1 | Round 1: 3 ch, 5 dc inside the ring, sl st to close the round, and tighten the loop.

Cut the yarn and secure it.

Change the color to C2.

C2 | Round 2: 3yo puff stitch x 6 in between the double crochets. Your first puff of this round should be a standing puff stitch. Then, make 1 sl st in the first puff to close the round.

Cut the yarn and secure it.

Attaching the stem to the flower head
  • Insert your hook into the flower so it sticks out at the bottom, in the middle of the magic ring.
  • Take the stem you made and grab the yarn end with your hook. Lead it to the inside of the flower.
  • Make sure to weave all yarn ends to the inside, including the end from the magic ring.
  • Once you have both yarn ends inside the flower, tie them together tightly and trim the ends.

Your stem is now attached to the flower head.

Change the color to C3 and continue.

C3 | Round 3: 5yo puff x 6 in the chain spaces between the 3yo puffs from the previous round. Your first puff of this round should be a standing puff stitch. Then, make 1 sl st in the first puff to close the round.

C3 | Round 4: Repeat round 3. At the beginning of the round, pull the first loop to match the height of the puff, and proceed to work 5yo puffs normally, starting in the nearest chain space (which may be situated behind your hook).

C3 | Round 5: 2yo puff x 6 in the chain spaces, but omitting the one chain stitch at the top of the puff. You should have 6 loops on the hook at the end of this round. Then, grab the yarn and lead it through all loops, then tighten it to close. Note: It may be hard to work in the round here with just six stitches. I recommend making 3 puffs, transferring them to a stitch holder, and making another 3. Then, lead the yarn through all of them one by one, including the three on the stitch holder.

Make one chain stitch and cut the yarn, so when you tighten it, the loop will close for good. Secure the yarn and weave it inside the flower head using your hook.

The smaller version of the crochet flower bookmark is ready.

Big Flower Head – Dome

C1 | Start: Make a magic ring.

C1 | Round 1: 3 ch, 6 dc inside the ring, sl st to close the round, and tighten the loop.

Cut the yarn and secure it.

Change the color to C2.

C2 | Round 2: 3yo puff stitch x 7 between the double crochets. Your first puff of this round should be a standing puff stitch. Then, make 1 sl st in the first puff to close the round.

Cut the yarn and secure it.

Attaching the stem to the flower head
  • Insert your hook into the flower so that it’s sticking out at the bottom, in the middle of the magic ring.
  • Take the stem you made and grab the yarn end with your hook. Lead it to the inside of the flower.
  • Once you have both yarn ends inside the flower, tie them together tightly and trim the ends.

Your stem is now attached to the flower head.

Change the color to C3 and continue.

C3 | Round 3: 5yo puff x 7 in the chain spaces between the 3yo puffs from the previous round.

C3 | Round 5: 2yo puff x 7 in the chain spaces, but omitting the one chain stitch at the top of the puff. You should have 7 loops on the hook at the end of this round. Then, grab the yarn and lead it through all loops, then tighten it to close. Note: It may be hard to work in the round here with just seven stitches. I recommend making 4 puffs, transferring them to a stitch holder, and making another 3. Then, lead the yarn through all of them one by one, including the four on the stitch holder.

Make one chain stitch and cut the yarn, so when you tighten it, the loop will close for good.

How to create the dome shape
  1. Insert your hook through the bottom of the flower, right where the stem is attached, and pierce it through the flower head. The end of your hook should stick out right where you closed the round 5.
  2. Grab the yarn end and lead it through to the bottom, so it’s visible outside.
  3. Then, pull it to create a dome shape, wrap it around the stem, and tie it securely
  4. Lastly, using your hook again, weave it back inside the flower head and cut the excess yarn.

The bigger version of the crochet flower bookmark is ready.

Finishing Touches

Weave in any ends you haven’t already. Use your iron to lightly steam the stem – it will help flatten the chain even more and even out the leaves. Your puff flower bookmark is ready!
