Measuring Your Head
For the headband to fit snuggly, it should be 5-8 cm (2-3 in) smaller than your head circumference. As the general guideline, you can use our Hat Size Chart.
Pattern Notes
This is a beginner-friendly project and the pattern uses standard US terms.
Materials and Tools
- Bulky weight yarn: pink
- Hook: 8 mm
- 2 faux fur pompoms
- Tapestry needle
- Scissors
- Measuring tape
- Stitch markers
Measurements
- Width: 11″ / 28 cm
- Height: 10″ / 24 cm
- Circumference: 26″ / 67 cm
Stitches and Abbreviations
- ch – chain stitch
- slst – slip stitch
- hdc – half double crochet
- hdcBLO – half double crochet back loop only
- slstBLO – slip stitch back loop only
Notes:
- You can modify your hat size during the process by adding more or less rows in the ribbing part. Remember to make it around 5 cm shorter than your head circumference (the ribbing part makes it stretchy).
- You can use ready pompoms or make your own ones. It is important that they have 2 strings for attaching them to the hat.
- The “ch 1” doesn’t count as a stitch.
- The bulky yarn makes the hat thicker. Pay attention to the ribbing process so it fits your head.

Chunky Hat Free Crochet Pattern
Start: Slip knot, ch 25
Row 1: starting into 2nd back bump from the hook hdc 21, slst 3, ch 1, turn
Row 2: slstBLO 3, hdcBLO 21, ch 1, turn
Row 3: hdcBLO 21, slstBLO 3, ch 1, turn
Continue repeating this sequence until 30 rows (or your head circumference).
Do not cut off the yarn.

Assembly:
- Slst along to connect to sides together. Fasten off and cut the yarn, leaving a long piece to close the hat.
- Using the needle pull the yarn through all the stripes around.


- Pull it tightly and secure it by tying. You can repeat pulling the yarn around to close the hole completely.
- Place the markers in spots where you want to attach your pompons.
- Using the needle, pull through the pompom’s strings and tie them on the other side to secure it.
