Cheers! Squares up! In the recent spate of Valentine’s themed crocheting, we’ve been remiss on publishing squares, those most useful and versatile of patterns. No longer! Here are some squares that will definitely put the cheer back in your crocheting.

The Cheers square is an easy yet fancy crochet square that has a dense edge offset by a lacier center that uses voids to offset its almost mandala-like design. A further interesting touch is the square-within-a-square center that is flipped 45 degrees with respect to the outer edge. Coupled with the eight-lobed mandala motif this is a stunning combination that will look great on its own, or as part of a larger project.

Here is a variant that uses a toned-down palette to great effect. Note how the central square in orange is totally offset by its cool and wintery surroundings. It’s so evocative of a winter evening’s bonfire, isn’t it? A link to this free pattern is included under the photos.

Speaking of fire, here is a Cheers square that is mostly reds and yellows, with a tinge of blues and whites: an evocation of hot flames to warm you up on a February night.
