Have you already found your favorite African Flower Hexagon crochet pattern? Or maybe you are still looking for your one and only? Don’t worry! I have prepared a special treat for you. First, we need to ask ourselves a very important question though. How To Crochet African Flowers? You will find the answers under the links below! Ready to explore? Obviously! It will surely be an exciting journey!

This pattern was originally designed by Lounette Fourie and Anita Roussouw and published in a South African magazine called ‘Sarie’ in 2009. Since then it developed into many amazing projects and shapes.

In this post, I will focus on the 6-petal African flower square and African Flower Hexagon. We also go through an African Flower Pentagon and explore the topic more broadly to see a variety of colors and free patterns to chose as your next WIP. At the end I show you my favourite color combinations of African Flower Hexagon Blankets and beautiful African Flower Crochet Patterns. Throughout here, you will find more than 50 different African Flower Hexagons to get your imagination wild!

How to crochet African Flower Hexagon

The African Flower Hexagon is based on the 6 Petal Flower. The 6 Petal African Flower, when surounded by a border, creates a hexagon shape, which gives this pattern more uses, as it is more flexible to incorporate in smaller and irregularly shaped projects, such as African Flower amigurumi toys, crochet tops, bikini bras, etc.

How To Crochet African Flower Pentagon

Even more ‘flexibility’ to create your desired shape give you African Flower Pentagon. It is a pattern you really need to learn, if you like to make 3D crochet projects with African flower motifs. The African Flower Pentagon will be useful in every difficult ‘moment’ to shape the toy as it should be. Look at the photos below:

Crochet African Flower Pentagon Free Pattern
Photos: Heidi Bears (upper), Woolytoons (middle), Heidi Bears (lower)

To show you how to use the pentagon, I used photos of Happypotamus, the Happy Hippo created by Heidi Bears (if you are interested in that pattern you can buy it here), and Miss Wooly by Woolytoons (you can find the pattern here). The lower photo shows the diagram of the flower pentagon. The more details available on Heidi Bears Creative: African Flower Pentagon.

After an in-depth look, you can notice that the pentagon areas were used very frequently to make this beautiful “hippopotamus” (The Happy Hippo) and fewer, but still necessary, to bring together the shape of this cute sheep (Miss Wooly).

As you can see on a diagram above, African Flower Pentagon is basically the same pattern as hexagon, except each round has one section less (5 not 6).

African Flower Square Toys

An African flower pentagon or hexagon can be incorporated as a motif into crochet toys and softies, especially easy ones with more complicated shapes. Here are examples.

African Flower Owl

The African Flower owl is an applique combining an owl with beady eyes (how cute is that?!) as well as an African violet. This is a great project that you can use to decorate literally anything. Also, because it its a small design, you can make it using those pesky yarn scraps that always seem to accumulate all over the place. Moreover, you can also make two of these, and stuff them to make a cute stuffie children’s toy, although crocheted eyes would be preferred for the smallest of recipients.

Lazy Kitty

The lazy kitty is a beautiful project, put together much like a traditional soccer ball. The hexagonal and pentagonal shapes neatly fold around and form its body. Lastly, the colorful flowers really lend themselves to an attractive and beautiful toy.

African Flower Gosling

Not African flowered-out yet? Here is a gosling pattern made using this wonderful technique. Not only is it fun to make, it’ll also be a child’s favorite floppy stuffie.
