Yarn Clouds Square
Two crocheted granny squares: one with teal, purple, yellow, and pink layers, and the other with shades of pink and white. Crafted using soft yarn, these vibrant squares are perfect for any free crochet pattern project.

The Yarn Clouds Square by Amelia Beebe is a beautiful granny square with a lacy texture and rich surface that just begs to be modified with different colors. The pattern is not particularly difficult and will be a fun design to incorporate into larger projects.

What You’ll Learn in This Pattern

It’s a great project for those who know how to crochet a granny square. This time, however, you will use back post stitches and chain spaces to create a beautiful, claud-like openwork design in its center.

The square is ready to go after finishing 12 rounds and measures 12”x 12” when made with the suggested materials.

Choosing the Right Yarn and Hook

This lovely crochet granny square pattern will come out beautiful when worked with worsted yarn and a 5 mm hook. The designer didn’t specify a particular brand, so you can go for your favorite medium-weight yarn. The type of yarn you should use depends on the project you are going to make with these squares.

How to Use This Square in Large Projects

Would you like to incorporate these beautiful, lacy crochet squares into something bigger? I can already tell you that they can be easily worked into stunning afghans, light summer blankets, or elegant pillow covers. For a regular crochet throw measuring 52” x 60”, you will need about 20 squares.

Use our Square & Block Blanket Calculator to find out how many blocks you’ll require for your blanket.

Best Colorway Options

As you can see in the photos above, not all embodiments are the same, but all of them are quite attractive, and each will find a décor that fits.

IMHO, the monochrome and two-tone versions are the most attractive. In particular, the blue and white square is very reminiscent of Delft blue pottery and will be great for a classic interior.

The shades of pink, plus white—LOVE that! I’d like to make it in blues, and one in several richer shades of pinks (such as magenta, fuchsia, hot pink, and probably white to “cool it down,” so to speak).
