Imagine this – super soft yarn, an easy repeatable pattern, a cup of hot tea, and you crocheting in an armchair… Sounds perfect, right? That’s exactly what this project is about. Why is it called Lazy Wave Baby Blanket? Well, let’s just say I crocheted the ripples a little bit differently than usual. By making five of them in one stitch (or decreasing five at once), we create textured bumps and valleys in our wave pattern. It’s a “lazy” method, but it works!
In this post, you will find a free crochet pattern for the baby blanket and instructions on adding edging.

How to Crochet Crab Stitch
Use this video tutorial to learn how crab stitch edging is made:
Lazy Wave Baby Blanket Free Crochet Pattern
We crochet this blanket in rows. Then, we finish the top and the bottom edges with a crab stitch. Finally, we add the right and left borders.
Notes
- The repeatable module is made with 16 stitches. The starting chain is a multiple of 16 +1.
- To make the blanket wider, add 16 stitches (or a multiple of 16) to the foundation chain count.
- Subtract 16 stitches (or a multiple of 16) from the foundation chain count to make the blanket narrower.
- Work more or fewer rows to modify the length of the blanket.
- This stitch doesn’t like tight crocheting style, so keep your tension relaxed and go up a hook size to match the gauge if you need to.
- 3 ch at the beginning of the round (a turning chain for double crochet) does count as a stitch and is included in the overall stitch count.
- 1 ch at the beginning of the round (a turning chain for single crochet) doesn’t count as a stitch and isn’t included in the overall stitch count.
The Pattern
START: chain 145
C1 / ROW 1: 3 ch, 2 dc in the 4th chain stitch counting from the hook, *5 dc, dc5tog, 5 dc, 5 dc in one st* x9, 3 dc in one st. (145)
C1 / ROW 2: 1 ch, 1 sc in each stitch until the end of the row (including the 3 ch we started row 1 with). (145)
C2 / ROW 3: 3 ch, 2 dc in one st, *5 dc, dc5tog, 5 dc, 5 dc in one st* x9, 3 dc in one st. (145)
C2 / ROW 4: 1 ch, 1 sc in each stitch until the end of the row. (145)
Repeat rows 3 and 4 until you reach the desired length of the blanket.
Color Scheme
Start with cream for the first three rows.
- ROWS 1-2: cream – 1 module (two rows creating one stripe)
- ROWS 3-4: brick – 1 module
- ROWS 5-6: dusty green – 1 module
- ROWS 7-8: emerald green – 1 module
- ROWS 9-12: burgundy – 2 modules
- ROWS 13-14: emerald green – 1 module
- ROWS 15-16: dusty green – 1 module
- ROWS 17-18: brick – 1 module
- ROWS 19-20: cream – 1 module
Repeat these colors 3 times in the same order. Then, finish with this sequence:
- cream – 1 module
- brick -1 module
- dusty green – 1 module
- emerald green – 1 module
- cream – 3 modules

Edging
The top and bottom edges of the Lazy Wave Baby Blanket are finished off with a crab stitch in cream yarn.
The sides of the blanket are finished off with custom edging.

Row 1
Work front post single crochet stitches alongside the edge, then chain 1 and do the same from the other side. It translates to 2 stitches per dc row and 1 stitch per sc row.

Row 2
Chain 1 and work single crochets in the back loop only all around the stitches you created.
Row 3
Chain 1, then close off the edging by working single crochets in each stitch through both sides at once, but use two inside loops of the stitches (the back loop of the front row and front loop of the back row). Your last stitch should be a slip stitch.

It’s done!
