After you master the basic granny square, can then use them to make blankets, scarves, vests and many more different projects 🙂 Best of all, you don’t need a gauge swatch, because the square itself doubles as one as well.
Materials you will need:
- Yarn of your choice, and you don’t need a whole skein of yarn to get going. A small to medium ball of yarn will do.
- Crochet hook (read a yarn label for info on which hook size to choose)
- Scissors
- Yarn needle (for weaving in ends)
Here’s a step-by-step guide on How to Crochet a Granny Square:
Round one:
- Start with a slip knot on your crochet hook. I have slip knot tutorial here.Â
- Wrap the yarn over the hook and catch it with the barb. Pull it through the loop on the hook. You have just made one chain stitch.
- Â Repeat step 2 to make 4 more chains. This will be your foundation chain.
- Insert the hook into the fifth chain from the hook. Slip stitch (wrap the yarn over the hook, and pull it through both loops on the hook). You have just created a circle.
- Yarn over the hook and pull over through the loop. Repeat this 2 times to get 3 chains in total.
- Find the center of the circle. Now we will make the first double crochet (dc). To do this, wrap the yarn over the hook and insert the hook into the circle. Grab the yarn again and pull it through. You have 3 loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull it through the 2 first loops. Yarn over again and pull it through those second 2 loops.
- Repeat step 6 twice, each time inserting the hook into the middle of the circle. You will end up with 3 double crochet stitches starting from the same loop (a cluster). Those stitches create one side of our granny square.
- Chain 3. Now we will create a corner. Yarn over and insert the hook into the center of the circle repeating steps 6 to 7. You have created the second side of the square.
- Chain 3 and repeat steps 6 through 7. You have created the third side of a square.
- Chain 3 and repeat steps 6 through 7. You have created the fourth side of the square. Chain 3.
- To close the first round, Chain 3. Then, insert the hook into the third chain from the bottom. This is the upper chain of the three chains we made at the beginning of this round in step 5. You should catch 2 loops, so that you now you have 3 strands of yarn on your hook. Yarn over and pull through. You’ve made a slip stitch (sl st). We finished the first round of our square.
Round two:
12. Chain 4.
13. Repeat steps 6 through 7 creating a cluster of 3 double crochet stitches, but this time we will insert the hook into the corner space of the first round on the left.
14. Chain 3 and create a next cluster of 3 double crochet stitches in the same corner space as the cluster you just did. Chain 1.
15. Repeat step 13, inserting the hook into the next corner space. Chain 3 and repeat step 13. Chain 1.
16. Make a cluster of 3 double crochet stitches into the next corner space. Chain 3 and make a cluster of 3 double crochet stitches into the same corner space. Chain 1.
17. Make a cluster of 3 double crochet stitches into the fourth corner space. Chain 3 and this time make a cluster of 2 double crochet stitches (instead of 3) into the same corner space.
18. Connect with the beginning of the round by making a slip stitch into the third chain from the bottom. It the end of the round 2.
Round three:Â
19. Chain 3.
20. From the second round, make 2 double crochet stitches into the closest gap space in the middle of the square’s side.
21. Chain 1. Make a cluster of 3 double crochet stitches into the corner space. Chain 3 and make a cluster of 3 double crochet stitches into the same corner space. Chain 1. Make a cluster of 3 double crochet stitches on the side gap. Chain 1. Repeat making clusters of 3 double crochet stitches into each gap space. Each cluster on a side is separated by one chain, and corner clusters are separated by 3 chains.
22. In the last gap, slip stitch into the third chain from the bottom made at the beginning of this round.
Finish off: Yarn over and pull through. Cut the yarn end and pull the hook out. Pull the yarn to tighten the knot.
Congratulation, you have just made your first granny square!
