I’m a craft designer and author of hundreds of articles and reviews about crocheting and other crafts. I search out and present novel approaches to classic patterns and techniques to encourage you to try something new. I’m delighted that so many of you read my posts and that I can contribute to promoting our crochet community. I’m interested in crafts, interior design and love traveling and sitting next to a campfire. I live with my husband and three kids in the Rockies.

Granny crochet blankets are a very classic project. However, here we show you that it does not need to be consigned to rustic or vintage-looking blankets for stashing at the cottage.

It’s a very useful technique that can be used to make beautiful, modern blankets that will work equally well in a Georgian mansion and a brand new 54th-floor apartment. Moreover, they are super fun to make and will be great for practicing your craft with friends.

This is a modern take on the granny afghan, which uses interwoven blocks instead of squares, enabling the crocheter to make a much more cohesive, fine-grained blanket without the swathes of large squares a traditional granny square afghan would have. Also, the size is adjustable, and this project can be adapted into a baby blanket. It’s a great, alternative way to crochet granny afghans, blankets or throws. The Great Granny Square blanket is a single, huge granny square that goes by rounds, and is designed to retain its shape regardless of how many layers you add. It’s a simple project, one of the simplest, grows very quickly, if not exponentially, and leaves you lots of room to play with colors. Pastels? Sure. Fall hues? Definitely. Rectangular Granny Square Afghan

Here is a more classic pattern making use of the granny stitch, but done in very modern, very loud fluorescent colors. Therefore, it’s a great combination of the old and the new, working a synergy between both that’s hard to find in many other projects.
