The season for light and airy crocheted items is passing, and we are now getting into the time for heavier, denser and definitely warmer projects. The brick stitch makes a heavier, drapy cloth ideal for a blanket or shoulder wrap that will serve you well during those chilly winter evenings, or as a winter-time decoration for your bed or couch. It’s a lovely and useful, if somewhat labor intensive stitch. A link to the free pattern is below photos.

An alternative is the millstone stitch, which is a bit similar in that it has a mesh of one color interspersed with bricks of a different color. It also makes a lovely, dense material. It’s great that some of these old-timey stitches are making a comeback and that you can work them into modern projects.
