This shawl was born as a partnership project with HOBBII yarns for the #HobbiiShadesOfRed challenge for Valentine’s Day.
Pattern Notes
Filet crochet uses solid and open blocks to create a motif. Each block consists of 4 STS worked over the corresponding stitches of the previous row. A solid block consists of 4 DC and an open block consists of 1 DC+CH 2+1 DC. When there are two blocks next to each other, the last DC of the 1st block is also the 1st DC in the next block. This means that two solid blocks will have 7 DC, not 8.
When working CH, skip the corresponding STS of the previous row. When working over a CH space, work your STS into the CH space and not in the ST.
In this pattern, CH 1 counts as 1 ST.
The shawl is made from the lower point, growing up, with equal increases on both sides. The shawl will be composed by “squares” that have a heart in the center, alternated as follows: an empty square with a full heart and a full square with an empty heart. Each square will occupy 14 rows and 14 blocks.
If you have used the indicated hook size and yarn, the finished shawl should be 340 cm in width and 113 cm in height, the two shorter sides of the triangle will be 210 cm.

The Pattern
(To begin a row, I have used the following method, since I like the straight edge it creates: CH 4 (for the beginning of a row) and TRC for the end of a row instead of DC.
Initial CH 4+CH 2 create half a block, same as final CH 2+1 TRC. Do not count those half blocks when counting STS to create the motifs.

So, in this example:
- on row 2 you have two filled blocks, so not considering initial half block (not shown in the pic), you will be counting: 3 DC for 1st block, 4 DC for 2nd and final block of row, not considering final half block (not shown in the pic).
- on row 3 you have two filled blocks and two empty ones, so not considering initial half block (not shown in the pic), you will be counting: 3 DC for 1st block, 1 DC+CH 2 for 2nd block, 1 DC+CH 2 for 3rd block, 4 DC for 4th and final block of row, not considering final half block (not shown in the pic).
This is only an example to show you how you start and finish counting every row. Last example to help you: imagine a row with 10 blocks, plus the initial (CH 4+CH 2) and final (CH 2+1 TRC) half blocks. No matter if they are full or empty, you will count like this: 3 STS + 3 STS + 3 STS + 3 STS + 3 STS + 3 STS + 3 STS + 3 STS + 3 STS + 4 STS for a total of 31 STS!

MC, CH 6 (counts as 1st TRC and 2 CHS), DC, CH 2, TRC, turn. (0 STS, 0 blocks)
starting from this row, follow the motif in the chart. The “X” blocks are starting and finishing half blocks (not considered when counting STS). The arrows indicate what direction you are making your row and reading the chart. I am gonna give you instructions for a few rows, then you can proceed the same way following the chart.

CH 6 (counts as 1st TRC and 2 CHS), 3 DC (1st DC in same ST as initial CH 6, from now until the end of pattern), 4 DC, CH 2, TRC (in same ST as last DC, from now until the end of pattern, a.k.a. 4th CH of initial CH 4 of prev.row), turn. (7 STS, 2 blocks)

Here is how I used my colors:
- Rows 1-8: C1
- Rows 9-22: C2
- Rows 23-36: C3
- Rows 37-50: C4
- Rows 51-64: C5
- Rows 65-78: C1
- Rows 79-92: C2
- Rows 93-106: C3
- Rows 107-120: C4
After every color change, FO, cut and weave in your tail.
The Border
Attach C5 with a SS to the top right corner of your work (RS facing you), CH1 and HDC in same ST, HDC in all remaining STS of row, CH 2 and proceed on the side. You will place (2 SC + 2 HDC + 1 DC) in 1st CH4 space, then CH 2, then place (1 DC + 2 HDC + 2 SC) in next CH4 space.
Repeat these instructions all along the side, when you reach the lover point of the shawl, CH 2 and proceed in the same way all around the other side. At the end, SS to 1st HDC made on the top side, FO, cut and weave in your end.
