Vintage Coasters
Close-up of crocheted hexagonal coasters with intricate floral patterns in beige and pink, featuring delicate edging. They're tied with ribbons, showcasing the beauty of a classic crochet pattern.

These beautiful coasters are almost too pretty to place your drinks on. The lacy centre gives them a light and airy feel, and will definitely complement any serving decor. For that matter, you can even use them as decoration straight up, without serving anything on them. They are easy to make, have a lovely edging that can be varied in color, and will work up to a complete set in no time.

What to Use for a Lace-Like Finish

The Vintage Coasters crochet pattern by Anabelia Handmade suggests using cotton thread (size 12), such as Anchor Freccia 12. Why thread instead of yarn? Because threads are perfect for working lace items like coasters and doilies. Paired with a steel 1.25 mm crochet hook, it allows creating intricate openwork details.

How Big Are the Finished Coasters?

A completed crochet coaster measures aprox. 4” x 4” (10 x 10 cm) when done with recommended materials and following pattern instructions. This size makes them big enough to hold your drinks safely and ensure surface protection from the heat.

Can I Stiffen the Coasters to Make Them More Durable?

Yes, you can! However, you should keep in mind that stiffening them will make them less absorbent. Therefore, you should decide what is more important to you – aesthetics or functionality.

If you want to stiffen your coasters to make sure they keep their shape well, you can do it with store-bought products like fabric stiffener that can be found in every Hobby Lobby store.

There is also a homemade solution. Mix water and white glue (like 1 part glue to 2 parts water) and submerge your crocheted coasters for a few minutes. Once done, you can pin them on your blocking board or mat to stretch them out evenly and let them dry.
