Understanding Increases and Decreases

Shaping crochet and knitted pieces requires adding or removing stitches in particular places. Working increases mean that you’re adding to the overall stitch count. Decreases, on the other hand, make the overall stitch count smaller.

A well-shaped look relies heavily on the consistent distribution of increases or decreases. While many projects call for specific places to add or remove stitches, others require even spacing between them.

When to Use This Calculator

We can find even decreases and increases in such projects as amigurumi toys, hats and beanies, garments, mandalas, or other circular designs. This calculator will be useful whenever you have to change the shape of a flat or three-dimensional project.

Even increasing and decreasing is especially important if you want to avoid bunching and visible “increase traces”. It happens when the increases are stacked on one another in consecutive rows, creating a visible line. With our calculator, you can adapt the places in which you add or remove stitches. Whether you’re working in the round or in back-and-forth rows, this tool will help you achieve symmetry.

Don’t ever worry about the symmetry of your projects again.

This is a fabulous find! I tend to go “out on my own” when crocheting. Decreases have always meant figuring it out the hard way (paper and pencil), and still not necessarily get it right. Thank you for making this.
