Around the Bases Blanket
two cool-toned crochet square blankets

The Around the Bases blanket crochet pattern by ChiChi Allen is a multi-stitch design that turns the iconic center square into an afghan. It was originally released as a crochet along with 16 “innings” or stitch components. Now we can all enjoy the free pattern, get creative with it, and create more and more crochet wonders!

Best Yarn & Hook Choices

You can make this crochet square blanket with almost any yarn weight. Some good yarn choices are Scheepjes Cotton 8, Loops & Threads Impeccable, Red Heart With Love (Solids), Red Heart Soft Classic, and Scheepjes Linen Soft.

The multi-colored sample was made with a 3.25 mm hook and Scheepjeswol Cotton 8, which is a fingering yarn.

What Stitches Should I Know Before Starting?

This blanket is like a stitch sampler, so you’ll practice and learn a variety of crochet stitches as you go. The designer recommends it for intermediate crocheters and those who feel comfortable with crochet basics.

Some of the stitches you’ll use are Shells, Popcorns, Star Stitch, Moss Stitch, Spike Stitch, V Stitch, and more. Each round brings in a new stitch, so by the end, you’ll have a wide range of crochet techniques in your repertoire.

What Size Does the Around the Bases Blanket Reach?

Your blanket’s size depends on your center block, yarn weight, hook size, and how tightly you crochet. Some people start with a small square and end up with a cozy lap blanket. Others start bigger and make a king-size bedspread. If you want a larger, cozier throw, just keep adding rounds until it’s the size you like.
