Little square tiles are very popular in the world of crochet, and I know exactly why – they are so versatile and fun to make! Little pieces can be joined together or used separately, as coasters, for example. It’s easy to enclose any design in a square shape, and one of the most loved is flowers. This lovely theme can be interpreted in drastically different ways, depending on what you want to accomplish. Three-dimensional pieces are very dramatic, while simple and flat ones appear to be more graphic. The shape of the flower can either be hidden or emphasized by the colors used, and they are equally, or even more important than the stitches. Crochet Flower Squares can be used to create stunning afghans, table runners, bags and even toys, so find one you like the most and start crocheting! Links to free patterns are under the pictures.

Lollipop Star Square Free Crochet Pattern

On the classic side, this beautiful design for a square is a great idea for a retro-styled panel for a cushion or pillow, or a decorative piece for furniture. The 3D central motif gives this square a highly textured surface, which is a great basis for playing with color combinations and is very pleasant and satisfying to the touch. The pattern itself is not difficult, and you can incorporate this design into many projects.

The Lana Blossom Square is a lovely pattern to add to your blanket-making quiver. While not spectacularly difficult, it will be a fun square to make for a crocheter of any skill and it’s intricate texture belies the ease with which it’s made. As you can see from the photos, the color variety is limited only by your imagination, and the square can be incorporated in to many different blanket designs or into any other square-based project. It can even function on its own as a trivet or doily.

A link to each pattern is underneath its picture. It is usually the name of the pattern written in blue.
