Some people consider squares to be a bit, well, square.
Others may consider them to be a bit cliche, but the reason cliches become cliches in language, is that they’re the hammers and screwdrivers in the toolbox of language. By the same token t’s a similar situation in terms of squares in crocheting. Indeed, they are the bread and butter of the craft, but they are also capable of being some of the most beautiful patterns out there. Thus, have a look, and see if you don’t agree.
Morgana Square Free Crochet Pattern
The Morgana square is a beautiful traditional square with a solid edge and a lovely floral center surrounded by a radial rosette. The pattern is a classic design augmented by a modern color set, with some earth tones in the background and brilliant reds and purples in the foreground. Overall, this is a great and worthy project that will be a wonderful foundation for a larger item, or a beautiful piece on its lonesome. Of course, the color set is up to you and your imagination, so the possibility of variation is huge. A link to the free pattern is included under the photos.

Hindsight Square
This 12″ square is a part of 2021 Crochet Block a Month CAL. Consequently, it’ll be great for projects where a larger, bulkier square is called for.

Drop in the Bucket Square Free Crochet Pattern
The Drop in the Bucket square is a lovely and simple pattern that makes use of chain stitches. In contrast to the Morgana square, it makes use of voids to define the shape of the central, round rosette motif. It too is an excellent block for larger blankets and afghans or center piece for smaller ones. Why not try to combine the two? A link to the free pattern is at the end of the post.
