Metric and Imperial Systems

There are two systems for measurements – metric and imperial. While the imperial system is used in only a couple of countries (USA, Liberia, and Myanmar), the rest of the world uses the metric system. Although the UK adopted the metric system, imperial units are still often used among the public there.

The imperial system uses units like an Inch, Yard, Foot, and Mile to describe length, and Pound, Ounce, and Stone to measure weight.

The metric system, on the other hand, uses a Meter, Centimeter, and Millimeter to describe length, and Gram, Kilogram, and Ton to measure weight.

How Many Grams are in an Ounce?

Let’s see how we calculate units from Imperial to Metric – for example, ounces to grams and yards to meters. Next, we will calculate units from Metric to Imperial – for example, grams to ounces and meters to yards. The last number in the line (marked italic) signifies commonly used approximate equivalents.

Imperial Units of Weight

1 ounce (oz) = 28.350 grams (g) = ~28 grams (g)

1 pound (lb) = 0.454 kilogram (kg) = ~450 grams (g)

1 stone (st) = 6.35 kilograms (kg)

Imperial Units of Length

1 inch (in or “) = 2.54 centimeters (cm) = ~25 millimeters (mm)

1 foot (ft or ‘) = 30.48 centimetres (cm) = ~30 centimeters (cm)

1 yard (yd) = 0.9144 metre (m) = ~90 centimeters (cm)

Metric Units of Weight

1 gram (g) = 0.035 ounce (oz)

1 kilogram (kg) = 2.2 pounds (lb) = 35.27 ounce (oz) = ~35 ounce (oz)

Metric Units of Length

1 millimeter (mm) = 0.039 inch (in) = ~0.04 inch (in)

1 centimeter (cm) = 0.39 inch (in) = ~0.4 inch (in)

1 meter (m) = 3.28 feet (ft) = ~3.3 feet (ft) = ~1.1 yards (yd)

Unit Conversions in Crochet

Where can we find these units?

  1. On the yarn label – yardage or meterage will tell you how long is the strand of yarn in the skein. The weight of the whole skein will be provided in grams or ounces. Learn to read yarn labels with our guide for beginners.
  2. In the pattern notes – in this section designers tell you how much yarn you need, and the measurements of the finished project.
  3. In the gauge instructions – usually, the gauge is measured in the 4×4 inch or 10×10 cm window

Depending on the country, designers and companies use different systems and units. Many English-speaking pattern designers and most yarn manufacturers provide both Imperial and Metric units to reach a wider audience.

When to use the Unit Conversion Calculator

Our yarn conversion calculator will come in handy whenever you need to translate Imperial units to Metric units or the other way around. Common situations may include:

  1. When you’re planning a new project or following a new pattern, you may need to translate yardage to meterage. It will tell you how many yarn skeins to buy.
  2. To determine how much yarn you have in your stash – by weighing the remaining yarn and comparing it to the yarn label info, you can make better use of the yarn ends. Use our Calculator to see How Much Yarn Is Left in your stash.
  3. If you want to substitute yarns of different weights, you have to swatch, check the gauge, and compare various lengths and weight information.

Conclusion

As you can see, converting yarn length and weight is essential for planning projects, substituting yarns, and making the most of your stash. You will never wonder how many yards is a skein of yarn again. Whenever you encounter units from an unfamiliar system, go to our yarn weight conversion calculator and solve your problems with a couple of clicks.
